Game 1 vs Newmarket - (Newmarket 11 Brampton 1)
Brampton was simply outplayed by a superior team on this night, but that's not to say they can't come back and be a force in this tournament. There's still plenty of ball to be played.
Game 2 vs Ilderton - (Ilderton 10 Brampton 5)
The Royals ran into another top team in the River Hawks of Ilderton. The wind was taken out of their sails when Ilderton took an early 8-0 lead after 2 innings. The lone bright spot was Alex Emmerson who tossed 5 innings, allowing only 2 R on 3 H.
Brampton will have a better showing when they face these teams with a fuller team. Many of the Royals' top players weren’t with the team this weekend shrinking the bench, so we still don’t know what this team is capable of.
Game 3 - vs Windsor A's - (Brampton 11 Windsor A's 10)
Between the two teams 23 batters became baserunners without the aid of a hit. (9 BB, 14 E) The only game Brampton showed some life albeit against an inferior team.

Game 1 vs Ajax - (Ajax 11 Brampton 0)
Like I was saying about slow starts. You can't expect to win or even compete when down 6-0 after 2 innings. Brampton might have been missing a couple of their key players, but it's certainly no excuse to lose the way they did. Twice in one week the Royals have been held to just one hit in their game.
Game 2 vs East York - (East York 12 Brampton 5)
This was the Royals best efforts in a few games. At this level it doesn't take long for teams to take advantage of their oppositions shortcomings. Brampton should feel good with their effort. Effort has never been their issue. It's getting the offense and pitching on the same page. It'll come with time.
Game 3 vs Newmarket - (Newmarket 4 Brampton 0)
Their best showing by far this weekend. Swartz rebounded nicely from his previous start and did an outstanding job of keeping (the arguably best team in the province) within range, holding the Hawks of Newmarket to just 5 singles. This game, albeit a loss should bring some comfort to the team, knowing the ability has always been there. They just need to channel it to the playing field.
This team needs its mojo back, to be the team everyone in the province feared. Don't wait for the other guy to carry the load. It's frustrating when the team doesn't perform the way we know it can.
I still see great things from this team.

Friday, July 18 vs Leaside - (Leaside 8 Brampton 2)
In a game that was extremely close for the first 5 innings, it had to be very frustrating for the batters who were putting the ball in play but it always seemed to be right at a defender. The Royals defense stood their ground and played a stellar game. The Royals were aggressive at the plate constantly putting the ball in play, but the Leaside defense were up to the task, preventing Brampton from getting any kind of momentum.
Saturday, July 19 vs Newmarket - (Newmarket 12 Brampton 5)
Saturday, July 19 vs Ajax - (Ajax 13 Brampton 0)
After being outscored 33-7, there's not much to say about this weekend. As a glass-half-full person I still can't think of any constructive to say. other than the effort is still there, but effort alone doesn't produce results.

Friday, Aug 1 vs Ajax Spartans - Ajax 5 Brampton 2
This was a game of missed opportunities.. The 6 hits supplemented with 6 BB, and two more by getting hit gave the team 13 baserunners. The batters did everything they needed to do by getting on base any way they can, but that's when things slowed to a grind stranding baserunner after baserunner.
This whole tournament is a grind and missed opportunities will send you home, but losing the first may be a blessing in disguise. The Royals plays Thornhill next, while Ajax plays Leaside who beat Newmarket last evening. Sure, Brampton might have lost a game, but nobody lives on the edge better than they do.
All they have to do is win their last game!
Saturday, Aug 2 vs Thornhill Reds
The Royals will be fine when they get back to the comfort of their COBA schedule. Even Leaside who has a winning record in Windsor, went 2 seasons (2004-05) at the Elims scoring only 4 runs without a win.

Saturday, August 16 vs Waterloo - Brampton 5 Waterloo 3
Being a veteran team, the Royals know a gift when they see it. These came in the form of errors by the young team. Brampton was able to take advantage of a couple of those errors to score2 runs. which was the difference in the game. Brampton have solidified their own defense eliminating errors of their own. They are making their opposition earn every run.
Ferreira looked like his old self going the distance hurling a complete game, allowing only 6 hits and 3 runs. I wouldn't be surprised to see him again on Sunday if the team is in a jam.
I hope to see Waterloo back in the league next season. They are an exciting team to watch and add enthusiasm to games.
Saturday, August 16, vs Etobicoke - Brampton 3 Etobicoke 2
This was by far the best game of the season for the Brampton Royals. They were focused yet very loose going into their battle with the Etobicoke Rangers. In my 18 years around this team, I don’t ever recall beating the Rangers in the playoffs, although they have come close on a few occasions.
It wasn’t the offense that carried the day, but rather it was pitching and defense. Alex Emmerson might have thrown his best game as a Royal in his 6 hit, 1 earned run, 99 pitch complete game. Alex had the Rangers guessing all game, as they were fouling off pitch after pitch (16), which began to frustrate them, thus throwing them off their game. Emmerson has worked hard on his craft and it’s nice to see him get rewarded for his work. Even after giving up a couple of runs in the 5th inning Emmerson and catcher Logan Janes didn’t flinch and stayed on course.
I think this was also their best defensive game of the season. The infield were scooping up everything, turning in a couple of solid double plays. Lebel was showing off his defensive range. Who knows what would have happened if Pinlac didn’t scoop up the hard line drive down the 3rd base line in the 7th.
It's a tribute to the Etobicoke Rangers. Anything less than the effort of the Royals put in, they don't win. It took everything they had to beat them. So often we will see Brampton put in a great effort but get very little out of it, this time they were playing on all cylinders earning a much deserving victory.
The Royals take on the Athletics tomorrow morning with the winner advancing to the final.
Sunday, August 17 vs Oakville A's - Oakville 9 Brampton 8
The Brampton Royals came up a little short on this day against the Athletics of Oakville. After an exciting game last night they faced a team that was hungry for a win. The A's were swinging at everything and making good contact, resulting in 3 doubles and 14 hits. Oakville were ahead 4-1 after 5 innings then the Royals rebounded with 4 runs in their 6th. Oakville then responded with 5 in the 7th. Now Brampton's in trouble, needing 4 to tie, but they could only muster 3 runs. Veteran Andrew Thomson's homer to deep right field made the game close.
May
(4-3)
Friday, May 2 @ Oakville - (Oakville 10 Brampton 5)
If anything, the Royals are consistent, their traditional slow start won't hinder their overall record. They have enough veterans to make sure they don't turn it into a 0-2 or 0-3 start.
Not much to say other than they should know how innocuous 2 or 3 errors can determine the outcome of what could have been a winning performance. It's not often we can say the pitchers turned in a nice performance overall while giving up 10 runs.
Saturday, May 10 @ Milton - (Milton 11 - Brampton 8)
Despite coughing up a 8-1 lead there were still a few shining moments. Game one of today's DH, Cameron Hibbs continued his solid pitching inducing ground ball after ground ball, resulting in easy outs. It was all possible because he threw strikes, walking only one batter. Cam looked to be in so much more in control than recent years, allowing only a measly single in his first 5 innings of work.
2nd baseman Dawson Fascia went far to his left to dive for a hard hit grounder, snaring it, throwing the batter out. He made it look like a routine play, but it was anything but that.
Andrew Thompson turned back the clock with his triple in the 3rd scoring Lebel and Speciale. Again, two errors led to 6 unearned runs. The Royals should never have lost that game, but they did.
Saturday, May 10 vs Milton - (Brampton 6 - Milton 4)
Some spotty defense lead to the Royals plating 5 unearned runs on four gifted errors. Arman Lakhani didn't allow the Milton any chance for a comeback in this game, giving up only a couple of hits over his 3 innings of work. Kyle Mucin came in to earn his first save of the young season.
The Royals took full advantage of everything the Red Sox gave them. Milton committed 3 errors in the 2nd inning allowing the Royals to score 5 runs on only 2 hits. The Royals offence was led by Caleb Chramrow, belting a doubled home Lebel and Cowper in the 2nd then added a single in the 5th, scoring twice and reaching base on each of his 3 plate appearances.
Wednesday, May 14 @ Burlington - (Brampton 8 - Burlington 4)
Being the season opener for the Brants they shake off their winters' rust, but it won't take long for them to regain their footing as the Ken Johnson Division leader.
The Royals opened the scoring on Ferreira's double to the right field fence bringing home Jeminson, then Dawson Fascia scored on a groundball single to shortstop by Lahey. Burlington were gifted a couple of runs on a couple of wild pitches. The Royals took control of the game in the 5th plating 3 runs on some sloppy pitching by the Brants. Overall, it was a messy game by both teams, certainly not up to the standards we're used to seeing, but a win is a win.
Thursday, May 15 vs Erindale - (Brampton 10 - Erindale 6)
It was the Royals home opener and Myles Swartz got his first start of the young season. He looked great in his 3 innings of work allowing only one base runner to reach 2nd base. The Royals took full advantage of Swartz’s pitching by opening up a 3-0 lead, helped by a couple of wild pitches.
The always powerful Cardinal lineup flexed their muscles and plated 5 runs earning them a 5-4 lead entering the bottom half of the 5th. Not to be undone the Royals stormed back with 6 runs of their own over the next 4 innings.
One of the most demoralizing stats in baseball is how many runners were left stranded at 3rd base. The Royals won the game because of the 8 baserunners to reach 3rd, 7 of them scored. That’s clutch hitting.
Pinlac hit the teams first dinger of the season on a deep fly ball over the left field fence. He contributed 3 runs, 2 RBI and 3 BB. Lebel and Jeminson chipped in 2 RBI each.
Arman Lakhani got the win throwing 3 very impressive innings, giving up a lone run.
Thursday, May 22 vs Oakville - Rain Out
Friday, May 23 @ Etobicoke - Rain Out
Thursday, May 29 vs Waterloo - (Waterloo 14 Brampton 10)
When you start the game down 6-0 when you record your first out, then allowing 3 more in the 2nd, you’re in for a long night. The Royals knowing they still had the whole game ahead of them, they bore down and scored 5 in their half of the first to close the gap somewhat. Brampton tallied for 3 more in the 4th closing to within a run, but Waterloo went ahead 14-8 in the 6th to which the Royals had no answer.
No one should take anything from this game because it won’t happen again, at least not this season. They can take solace knowing they got this out of their system, so now they can concentrate on their schedule and tournaments. This game showed you can’t win by hitting alone, you need to have to arms to back it up.
On to Oakville Friday night.
Friday, May 30, @ Oakville - (Brampton 13 - Oakville 9)
On this night in Oakville, the Brampton Royals went back to the basics; get em’ on, get em’ over, get em’ in. It’s impressive when you score 13 times on only one extra base hit, but they did have some help by the As defense which committed enough errors to gift the Royals the game. If it wasn’t for the errors, it would have been a much more competitive game. Between the errors, base hits and walks Brampton had at least 24 base runners.
The offence was led by the trio of Ferreira, Lebel and Murphy who combined for 6 hits, 7 runs and 3 RBIs. Jeminson pitched in with a couple of hits, a run and RBI.
The Royals close the month with a 4-3 record, a little behind the pace set last season. June is usually a slow month for league play when the tournaments kick in. The team is entered in the second Sarnia tourney. I’m not sure if they will compete in the annual Vaughan tournament, which is a June tournament. The Royals start June with a game in Waterloo, then home to Etobicoke and Waterloo. It will serve them well if they can take 2 of those 3 games, then head to Sarnia full of confidence.
June
(2-3)
Sunday, June 1 @ Waterloo - (Brampton 14 - Waterloo 7)
I wasn’t really sure which way this game would take. The Tigers of Waterloo made it look too easy just a few days ago, scoring 14 times (9 of them in the first 2 innings) on 14 hits. This time Brampton turned the tables and took this one handily, but it was close until the Royals 5 times in the second half of the game. The scores were close throughout the game, but it seemed Brampton was in control throughout.
In a total team effort, everyone had a hand in the scoring, whether it was with a hit, run, base on balls, RBI or simply advancing the runner(s). Team Captain Speciale (3 H, 3 RBI), Perreira (D, T, 2 RBI) and Chramow (2 H, 3 R) led the offence.
Although the pitching wasn’t up to par, they didn’t not allow Waterloo to gather any momentum. It needs to be noted that Emmerson allowed a run with 5 Ks in his 4 innings of work and Lakhani earned the win for his 4 innings.
Perreira seemed to inject some much-appreciated energy to the lineup, and it seemed to carry right through the whole team. It was fun to watch.
The team takes on Etobicoke at home on Thursday. We know the Rangers will play .800 baseball the rest of the way, so these are very important games early in the season.
Thursday, June 5 vs Etobicoke - (Etobicoke 19 - Brampton 2)
Nothing else to say other than the score was an accurate representation of the game.
Thursday, June 12 vs Waterloo - Mutual agreement to cancel, to be rescheduled
Monday, June 16 @ Erindale - (Brampton 5 Erindale 2)
That’s more like it! On a very offensive minded team the Royals had to lean on the pitching to bail them out of this game. Myles Swartz was brilliant in this one lasting 6 innings and allowing one run. He got out of a bases loaded one out jam without allowing a run in the 2nd. As good as Swartz was, Cameron Hibbs was even better, going 3 innings without allowing any runs against a slugging powerhouse. Hibbs faced only 2 batters over the minimum. Of his 3 innings, Hibbs got the leadoff batter out twice. That spells success. All they need now is some consistency.
The offense could use some help, only garnering 6 hits, and counting on a couple of old timers (Ferreira and Thomson) for 1 double each. Sometimes it’s not the number of hits you have, but when you hit them. I think it’s the lowest scoring game versus Erindale in quite some time.
Thursday, June 19 vs Milton - (Milton 8 Brampton 4)
Opposition's fast starts seems to be the Royal’s Achilles heal. They are finding it so difficult to rebound when down early. It was 5-0 in the 2nd before Brampton got on the board with a run of their own. In their 7 losses this season, Brampton, in the first inning has given up 29 runs while scoring 0. If you’re down before the bats have a chance to put you ahead, it begins to weigh on the whole team. At this level trying too hard to score runs is like playing in quicksand. The harder you try, the worse it gets. I believe it’s clear by now, the team needs pitching. Milton is a very young team that will compete in 2 or 3 years, not now. In their 2 wins against the Royals, they won by a combined score of 19-12. Let’s see what happens in Vaughan this weekend, where the Royals have had some good runs in the past.
Thursday, June 26 vs Burlington - (Burlington 7 - Brampton 3)
The Royals were in tough in this one, facing Luke Connors who is probably the best pitcher in COBA right now who entered the game with a miniscule 1.27 ERA with his 3 wins.
Burlington scored 2 in the 2nd, then Brampton answered with a run on Lebel’s three bagger in the 3rd, but it was the Brants 5th inning 2 run homer that put the game out of reach.
Leading off the Brampton 5th C. J. Fearon clubbed an inside-the-park home run deep to centre. It was an absolute pleasure watching the thoroughbred fly around those bases. Burlington contested the play, but the men in blue upheld their call.
Both teams played good defense with Brampton turning a couple of nice double plays. Brampton had no problem getting runners on base, their issue was getting them home. Quite often it’s those big hits that extend an inning that make the difference. The Royals stranded 9 on the base paths.
Was impressed with Hibbs matching Connors inning for inning in the first half of the game. He should feel confident going into his next start. All in all, it was a great effort by everyone. The results will come.
Monday, June 30 @ Erindale - Rain Out
July
(6 - 3)
Thursday, July 3 vs Etobicoke - (Etobicoke 7 Brampton 5)
If there was ever a loss that felt like a win, this was it. The Royals stood up to the Rangers of Etobicoke and came ever so close to beating them. The Royals were determined to rid the memories of their previous meeting, and have the whole team play as one. Every time Etobicoke scored Brampton came right back with some kind of response, to the point where they were tied after 8 innings, only to lose 7-5.
It was nice seeing Lahey hit his first career dinger leading off in the Royals 4th. Over the past month Lahey made the most out of his 14 AB, with 4 RBI and a .429 AVG.
Swartz turned in another stellar performance going 5 innings allowing only 3 ER keeping the score close.
This team can stand up to anyone. The effort has always been there; they just need to play within themselves. Don’t try to do everything yourself, and the rest will take care of its self. Let’s hope they can carry what momentum they gained today when they wrap up their home & home series on Friday.
Friday, July 4 @ Etobicoke - (Etobicoke 5 Brampton 4)
The Royals did everything right but still came up a little short. They answered the Rangers 3-0 lead with 4 in the 5th, but couldn’t comeback from being down a run in the 7th. Despite a short bench everyone contributed, which resulted in an errorless defensive display and great pitching from Mucin and Emmerson, who helped their cause by walking only 1 batter. If they were playing any other team that would have been a winning formula. Stay the course.
Wednesday, July 9 @ Burlington - (Brampton 9 Burlington 2)
The Royals used the momentum gained from the 2 previous game vs Etobicoke. Although they were losses they were able to learn enough from them to have a very good game against Burlington. The key to beating Burlington is shutting down Sogan, everything starts with the talented veteran.
It all starts with pitching and Ferreira was his old self dominating the Brants bats, allowing only 1 ER over his 8 innings of stellar work.
Joe’s pitching freed up the bats to do their thing. Ferreira’s led the way with 3 three hits and a couple of RBIs. Cowper contributed 3 RBIs of his own.
The Royals dipped into their junior talent pool calling up Caymo, Porter and Sherwin this week. They will be a welcomed addition to the team down the stretch.
Thursday, July 10 vs Erindale - (Brampton 15 Erindale 2)
The Pinner Parade was in full view tonight at Dash, as Patrick Pinlac brought home 7 baserunners including a game ending grand slam to deep left field, as the Royals took advantage of some sloppy pitching. Jemminson needs to be acknowledged for his 3 hits also. Sam Lebel was the table setter scoring three times on Pinner's three hits.
This was all possible because of the pitching the Royals got out of Myles Swartz shutting down the big bats of Erindale. He allowed only 2 runs over his 6 innings on the hill.
A total team effort resulting in a well played game, only 1 BB and no errors helped to minimize baserunners.
Sunday, July 13 @ Waterloo - Home & Home DH - (Waterloo 10 Brampton 9)
In a game that appeared to be locked up, was allowed to slip away by an aggressive Waterloo team. With a nothing-to-lose attitude they took full advantage of Brampton's sloppy pitching plating 6 runs in the 7th. Those 6 runs came on only 2 hits (both doubles), The 3 BB and 3 HBP in that inning were indefensible.
After the game the team should have been talking about Thomson, Cowper and Lahey who combined for 11 hits and 5 RBI.
I don’t know if the team having a designated closer would have made a difference in this one. Someone who knows their role and can prepare themselves for whatever happens in the closing innings. Regardless of the callups experience, it’s hard to adjust to the speed at this level. Their new-found experience will serve the team well as they advance through their schedule.
Sunday, July 13 @ Waterloo - (Brampton 6 Waterloo 2)
Another good team effort. With a lone error that didn’t the hurt and 3 BB once again helps to keep their hitters off base. Mucin turned in another stellar 106 pitch, complete game performance. He picked the right time for his best game of the season.
Lahey continued his productive hitting. In each of his 4 AB, he either advanced the runner or brought them home.
Lahey’s hitting of late needs to be noted. These are his numbers for his first 9 games (to the last day of the Vaughan Tournament), and his numbers since then. His 19 hits this year equals the 19 he had in his previous 4 seasons. It’s been fun the watch his progress over the last couple of years. It’s players like Lahey that will be an impact in the upcoming tournaments. His confidence is contagious.
First 9 games:
AB 26 BA .269 OPS .591 7 H 4 RBI 3 R 3 K
Last 7 games:
AB 22 BA .545 OPS 1.338 H 12 5 RBI 4 R 1 K
Thursday, July 24 vs Oakville - (Brampton 11 Oakville 0)
Even Mother Nature didn’t like the score so she put an end to the game. With the Royals well in front 11-0 with 2 out in the bottom of the first, she had seen enough.
I’m sure the team felt good to get back to league play after the terrible Hap tournament. Just like the Hap, where everyone had a hand in losing those three straight games, and now they all had a hand in winning tonight. Everyone scored at least one run, and Lebel and Speciale had three RBI each and Cowper and Fascia each chipped in with a couple. The Royals had 5 extra base hits including Speciale’s dinger. Mucin tossed a nice tidy inning.
The team knows how to hit, but they must quickly adapt the much better pitching next weekend. This would be a huge help for the pitchers.
Friday, July 25 @ Milton - (Brampton 10 Milton 2)
This was a tight one for 7 innings with the score 2-2, until the 8th. when they scored 3, then added 5 more in the 9th to finish it. Victor Speciale’s hot hitting continued in this game with two doubles, scoring twice.
Mucin used last nights game to stretch it out for this one. He blanked the Red Sox on a six hitter over his 6 innings of work. They will need pitching like that next weekend. The team needs nothing less, if they wish to advance in the National Qualifier. The Royals are 5-1 in their last 6 games in league play.
Tuesday, July 29 @ Erindale - (Brampton 18 Erindale 9)
There was no doubt of the outcome even early in this game. The Royals played against a tired team. This was the Cardinals fourth game in three nights.
The numbers tell the story:
Six players had at least two hits,
Ten batters scored a run
Murphy and Cowper belted home runs then Ferreira hit two of his own collecting 5 RBI
Ferreira turned back the clock earning the win on the hill.
I hope Estey ranks Brampton low in his tournament preview, then the opposition will hopefully play a number 4 or 5 pitcher against them.
Having won six of their last seven games, I think they are ready for the weekend, not only under the guidance of coach Fascia but also of the senior guys on the team, they have so much experience.
