Game Updates - 2022
 May
                                                                                                           League Play 3-3

May 12 vs Etobicoke – Etobicoke 13  Brampton 6 - After a 2-year hiatus, the Rangers used the game to make a statement they won't be giving up their crown without a fight. The Royals on the other hand used the game to shake off 2 years' worth of rust, giving up 13 runs. B'Mac threw 2 innings allowing 2 hits and 0 runs. Aidan Murphy went 2 for 3 with a couple of RBIs and 2 runs.

May 13 at Oakville - Brampton 15  Oakville 5 - The Royals traveled down QEW to take on the defending COBA playoff champs of 2019. Leading 7-0 after 3 innings the game was never in doubt. Mike Burke and Cam Hibbs both threw a couple of scoreless innings. and Joe Ferreira began his defense of his 2019 MVP award by belting his first HR of the season, but it was Dawson Fascia who led the way with a double and triple contributing 5 RBIs and a couple of runs.

May 20 at Oakville - Brampton 8  Oakville 7 - Joe Ferreira rebounded nicely after his previous outing vs Etobicoke, tossing 4 innings allowing a hit and no runs. Yannick provided the power in this one going 2 for 4 and adding 3 RBIs and 2 SB.

May 25 at Erindale - Brampton 25  Erindale 6 - Playing in their third road game in a row the Royals took on their Division competitor, the Erindale Cardinals on a cold, wet night. As a team the Royals batted 24 for 41, 5 BB, 2 Ks, scoring 25 runs, but this was only a 5-inning game. Again B'Mac threw 2 innings not allowing a run and the batting was evenly distributed amongst the team. Each of the starters had a hit and a run.

May 26 vs Etobicoke - Etobicoke 14  Brampton 3 - Lakhani threw great over his 4 innings allowing only 6 H and 4 Ks. Sam Lebel followed with his 2 innings not allowing any runs on 2 H. Pinner led the batting going 3 for 4 scoring a run.

May 30 at Erindale - Erindale 16  Brampton 8 - 8 runs should be enough to win in this league but not against Erindale. 10 of Erindale's runs came on errors, so the Royals beat themselves which forced our pitchers to throw far too many pitches (181 for the game). Pinner and Lebel both hit lead off home runs.  B'Mac continued his nice start to the season tossing the final 2 scoreless innings.

June

 League play – 4-3

Tournament play – 5-3

June 1 at Milton – Milton 8  Brampton 5 - After falling back to .500 the Royals were hoping to get back on the winning track, but the Red Sox had other ideas.  Hough threw a strong 5 innings allowing only 2 earned runs and Victor turned 2 BB into a couple of runs.

June 2 vs Oakville – Brampton 13  Oakville 5 - This could be a turning point in the season if the Royals should lose this game vs Oakville. Brampton doesn’t want to fall further back to 2 games under .500. Joe Ferreira provided the power in this one bashing a couple of lead-off solo shots. Jayden Jeminson helped out by going 2 for 4 with 3 RBI. Arman Lakhani threw another great game going 5 innings and giving up only 2 runs.

June 8 at Burlington – Burlington 8  Brampton 6 - They have yet to put together 3 strong games in a row. Hopefully, they will use the Vaughan tournament to straighten out a few pitching and batting issues. Brampton got a nice pitching performance out of Cam Hibbs throwing 4 strong innings, giving up an unearned run.  Royal’s Ferreira added a 2-run HR of his own.

June 9 vs Etobicoke – Rainout

Vaughan Tournament

June 10 vs Leaside – Brampton 11  Leaside 3 - The team was focused. The Leaside Leafs were not. Arman Lakhani turned in another great outing tossing 5 innings, allowing only 2 runs before handing the ball over to Logan Janes for the final 2 innings. Our leader Victor had his best game of the season going 2 for 4, 3 RBI, and a dinger.

June 11 vs Vaughan – Brampton 11  Vaughan 2 - Steve Hough was in trouble many times but being the savvy veteran, he worked his way out of any hole he dug himself. He allowed only 2 runs on this day. Yannick came in for an uneventful 2 innings to finish up. Alex Fascia led the way with the bats going 3 for 4, 3 RBI, and scored a couple of runs.

June 11 vs Ajax – Ajax 4  Brampton 3 - Ajax showed a lot of pride in shutting down the Brampton hot bats forcing them to leave 11 LOB. Between Joe Ferreira and Michael Sookdeo, they went 3 for 4, scoring 3 times. Aidan Murphy took the hill and showed the coaching staff he should be called upon again no matter the circumstances. Aidan threw 6 innings, only allowing 3 ER on 5 hits. Well done. Let’s hope the Royals take the momentum gathered this weekend to their league play.

June 12 vs Thornhill – Rained Out

Playoff teams Brampton, Thornhill, Newmarket, and Ilderton will split the prize money.

June 16 vs Erindale – Brampton 15  Erindale 14 - Down by 2 going into the 9th, the Cards opened the inning with a double. In the bottom half the Royals Aidan Murphy started with a single, then stole 2nd two pitches later which set the table for Victor’s double to right sealing the Royal’s victory. Oh, hum, just another Cards/Royals game.

June 17 at Oakville – Brampton 15  Oakville 7 - With the addition and subtraction of a few players, the 2022 Oakville A’s are the same team that showed true grit by beating the Royals for the 2019 COBA playoffs championship. Brampton opened the game by getting the first 7 batters on base whether it was by hitting, walking, or getting hit by a pitch, which resulted in a 7-0 lead. Game over!

June 23 vs Burlington – Brampton 14  Burlington 9 - The offense was carried by the trio of CJ, Pinner, and Victor. They hit a combined 12 for 17, scoring 7 times with 7 RBI. To keep the pitchers fresh for the weekend they had a committee of Royals throwing in this one. Hibbs, Janes, Emerson, and McLaughlin combined for a well-pitched game giving up only 2 earned runs. Janes induced ground ball after ground ball but the fielders behind him committed 5 errors, making him throw more pitches than he wanted. I believe they are ready for the weekend.

Lakeside Tournament

June 24 vs Sarnia – Brampton 3  Sarnia 2 - Since the Royals are in the Group of Death with three of the best teams in the province. They have never had a deeper bench than they have right now, giving coach Fascia so many in-game options to explore. For now, it will still be the veterans that will carry the team.  The Royals are a battle-hardened team that have been dragged through the trenches over the past few years. It’s about time the Royals dish some hurt’n on their opposition.

Little used Mike Burke was told before the game he’d be going in for the first pitching change. Arman had other ideas, going the distance and not allowing any more runs. On the offensive side, Marco took care of things offensively with his game-winning walk-off and his earlier homer helped also. There are many players that will shy away from being vocal on and off the field, but being a catcher has opened the door enabling Marco to become one of the leaders on the team, a leader with his bat, his glove, and on the bench.

June 25 vs Tecumseh – Tecumseh 7  Brampton 5 - The confidence of the team had to be sky high after their narrow win over Sarnia who beat the Royals in the 6th round on their way to winning the 2019 Elims. Sarnia also lost the National Championship 4-3 to Tecumseh in 2016. This is pretty heady stuff playing against these guys, but they are human just like us, so anything can happen.

Brampton would have to get past an old pain in the butt Kyle Breitner who we faced many, many times when he closed out games for the Etobicoke Rangers. The Royals jumped out in front answering the Thunder’s run in the first with 3 of their own. Vic’s 2-out double brought home, Marco and Sam, then Keegan’s single scored Victor. The pitching settled down for a few innings before Tecumseh sealed the game by scoring in the 5th and 7th innings. It was a very well-played game.

June 25 vs Strathroy – Brampton 5  Strathroy 1 - The Royals of Strathroy made it as far as Brampton did in the 2019 Elims (the 6th round), but back in 2016, they were runner-up in the country to none other than Tecumseh. Although Brampton lost to Tecumseh earlier, they must take some solace knowing they can compete with teams of that stature. Strathroy’s defeat to Sarnia put them a loss away from going home, which makes a team even more dangerous.

Aidan Murphy used his 6 innings on the hill wisely giving up 1 run on a hit. Brad McLaughlin finished up with an uneventful final inning. CJ Fearon and Keegan Murphy both pitched in with 2 hits and an RBI each.

Now the team must wait for the officials to tally up the scores to determine who would be the Wild Card team, based on who allowed the least number of runs. It was between 3 teams, Brampton (10 RA), Erindale (16 RA), and Etobicoke (15 RA). Milton beat Etobicoke 10 in their final game putting them out of the tournament. Allowing only 10 runs vs three of the best teams in the province is a huge tribute to the Royal’s pitching staff. They were responsible for sending the team to the playoffs.

June 26 vs East York – Brampton 10  East York 4 - Halfway through the 3rd inning, the Royals were up 3-1 on the strength of doubles hit by Marco and Victor. 5 singles, a walk, and a home run (Joe Ferreira). Ferreira looked very much like his last season winning the COBA MVP. It doesn’t matter where the ball is pitched, he’ll go get it. Between Yannick, Victor, and Marco they combined for 7 H, 3 R, and 4 RBI.

June 26 vs Tecumseh – Tecumseh 10  Brampton 1 - The Royals were never in this one as they ran out of pitchers. Instead of being upset about the final game, think about what you did over the whole weekend. If I had to choose two stars of the game for the Royals I would pick Yannik who went 2 for 3 with the lone RBI and pitcher RJ Page who went a scoreless 3 innings to close out the game.

The pitchers would finish the tournament with a 3.91 ERA and the batters with a .243 AVG. against the best the teams in the province. Nice to see the pitching carry the team for a change.

June 30 vs Milton – Milton 19  Brampton 2 - The Red Sox scored early and often. I’ve never seen Milton hit for power like this game, belting out 7 doubles and a triple. 4 of their batters had 3 RBI or more, so the hitting was spread out through their lineup. Royal's Jayden Jeminson had a good night at the dish going 2 for 2, 2 RBI, and scored a run.

                                                                         -----------------------------------------------------

July

League play – 3-3

Tournament play – 4-3-1

July 7 vs Oakville - Brampton 12  Oakville 11 - Brampton opened a 7 -2 lead in the 2nd inning on the strength of a 3-run homer by Aidan Murphy to deep left. The A’s of Oakville fought back to take the lead 11-9 going to the bottom of the 7th. All 6 of the Oakville runs in the 7th were unearned which shows how an insignificant error can easily prove costly. In all, 9 of the A’s runs were unearned.

Once again Arman Lakhani turned in another fine performance. Allowing 5 runs (3 earned) over his 5 innings of work. Arman faced 30 batters and greeted 21 of them with a first-pitch K. Logan Janes came in after Page’s nice inning and an error on a popup led to 6 unearned runs and an extra 14 pitches thrown. Logan was effective enough to earn the win. Errors at this level will kill you. B’Mac finished the game with a perfect inning.

July 9 at Milton – Milton 3  Brampton 2 (1) - Steve Hough pitched one of his best games of the season going the distance allowing only 4 hits.  C J went 2-4 but couldn’t cash in any of the hits. Keegan’s lone hit was a big one hitting a soaring 2 run shot over the left-field fence. Between the two teams, none of the 5 runs were earned. It was a well-pitched game on both sides.

July 9 at Milton – Brampton 13  Milton 12 (2) - Six of the Brampton starters had a multiple-hit game. When any team offers up 17 hits and 8 BB the Royals will always take that gift and score a ton of runs. Joe Ferreira tossed the first 4 innings giving up 3 earned runs with the score 7-7. Hard luck Cameron gave up 5 runs and Alex got the wheels back on track with a nice 2 1/3 innings giving up a hit and nothing else for the win. The team is off until Thursday when they visit a hot Burlington team.

July 13 at Burlington – Burlington 11  Brampton 5 - On what looked like a rainout in the afternoon the skies cleared nicely getting a full game in. Burlington was coming off their worst defeat of the season and hungry for a win.

4 more Brampton errors sealed their fate. In the 26 games played this season, the Royals have allowed 90 unearned runs. The 5 unearned in this one were the difference in the score.

Alex Fascia was responsible for 3 of Brampton’s runs with his 3 hits, 3 runs, and 3 RBI. Fascia’s 2-run double in the 1st kept the Royals close. Emerson had a tough night on the bump and his game was definitely impacted by the errors. Half of his 8 runs allowed were unearned. Dawson came in to finish the game with his 2 innings giving up only 1 earned run of his 3 allowed.

....................................................

The Hap

July 15 at Etobicoke – Brampton 5  Etobicoke 4 - In 2019 the Royals finished with an 0-3 record and a 1-2 record in 2018, even though we know they were one of the best teams in the province. It would be something special to advance to the playoffs, but having to play Etobicoke’s first game won’t be easy will make it that much harder.

Marco got on base twice and scored 3 runs. Aidan and Vic each had 2 hits and 2 RBI. Arman threw a great complete game 6 hitter yielding 4 runs for the all-important win. Nice start.

July 16 at Etobicoke – Brampton 9  Ajax 7 - With a huge win under their belts, the Royals now take on the Ajax Spartans. Ajax beat the Royals 4-3 last month in the Vaughan Tourney, so Brampton will be looking for redemption.

This was a complete team effort with everyone contributing either a run, RBI, or a hit. Sam Lebel had 2 runs, 2 hits, and an RBI. The wily old vet Steve Hough showed off his grizzle by going the distance. He was as good as he needed to be to earn the win.

July 16 at Etobicoke - Brampton 6  Strathroy 6 - Like Ajax, the Royals have recent history with the Royals of Strathroy. We beat them at the Lakeside Tourney a few weeks ago in London 5-1. Strathroy is a very good team making it to the Nationals Final 6 in 2016. They know how to win.

Hits were very scarce in this one, with no team being able to garner any momentum. Jayden Jeminson hit a game-saving 2-run single in the 7th inning. Aidan threw 5 innings of 7 hit, 5 run ball, then gave way to B’Mac who allowed a couple of runs in the last 2 innings.

The team now must wait while they tally the team records to see who advances to the semi-finals tomorrow.

July 17 at Milton – Burlington 3  Brampton 2 - Many very good teams were knocked out of the tournament, but Brampton’s record allowed them to advance to the semis.

Joe Ferreira went the distance allowing the 3 runs on 8 hits. The Royals could only muster 5 hits with Sam Lebel getting 2 of those hits and knocking in both runs.

The team ends the tournament with a 2-1-1 record which they can build on for their run at the Elims in 2 weeks’ time.

July 21 vs Burlington – Brampton 16  Burlington 6 - It was Burlington who threw ice on the Royals’ plans a week ago from reaching the Happ Finals. Give Burlington full credit for their play last week and were well deserving for their win over Ilderton.

Between Joe, Aidan and Sam, they scored 7 times on 8 hits and 7 RBI with 4 home runs. Arman continued his hot pitching over his 3 innings of work giving up 2 harmless hits, earning his 6th win against 1 loss. Tomorrow will be a much different opponent at Connorvale Park.

July 22 at Etobicoke – Etobicoke 10  Brampton 0 - The night before Brampton took on a Burlington that was a mere shadow of itself with many of the regulars missing from action, for which they paid the price. A team playing the Rangers can’t expect to compete when you are missing four quality players in Rickli, Thomson, Ferreira, and DiRoma. As good as the Royals have been playing, they couldn’t gather any momentum in this one against the veteran Andrew Hyde on the bump giving up only four hits.

.....................................................

The Elims

July 29 vs Ilderton - Ilderton 5  Brampton 4 – Having made the trip down the 401 to Windsor we were greeted by a beautiful ballpark. The stands are very old (yet comfortable) and I understand will be replaced soon with aluminum seating.

The first game had the look of a mismatch as our 3rd-year pitcher Alex Emerson faced off against an old veteran Jordon Townshend. Much has to be said of the gutsy game Alex Emerson turned in. Four times Alex had 3 up, 3 down innings. I think it was the best he threw all season. Alex showed off his efficiency by using 13 pitches or less to get out of 5 of his 6 innings of work. He deserved a better fate than the loss.  Ferreira was the lone star of this one with his 3 RBI.

The Royals lost more than the game, they lost the services of CJ Fearon for the tournament when he hurt his knee sliding into 2nd base in the Brampton 3rd. it turned out to be not as bad as first thought but bad enough to keep him out of the lineup. He was leading the team in runs, singles, stolen bases, on base percentage and batting average. He's one of the teams most valuable players, a five tool player will be sorely missed.

July 30 vs Erindale - Brampton 5  Erindale 4 –  In the Royal’s bottom of the 7th inning to tie the game, they all heard the sweet sound of the dinger coming from Aidan Murphy’s bat. It was no doubt the biggest run of the season for Brampton. If that home run doesn’t happen, we go home after losing our first 2 games. It would have taken a very long time to recover from that.

An intentional walk to Pinlac loads them up for Thomson (who has a penchant for getting hits when they are needed most) on his third pitch smacks one down to first base that Novia can’t coral bringing in the winning run in the bottom of the 9th. No surprise, Thomson comes through again.

July 30 vs Strathroy – Brampton 9  Strathroy - This stubborn Strathroy team won’t go away, in fact, they scored the tying run in the top of the 7th inning to send the game to extras again at 6-6.

After a quiet 8th, Strathroy scores a run on a solo homer to go ahead 7-6 then load the bases but can’t cash them in. Brampton has to come up with a run to extend their run to the next game. Pinlac takes a walk to open the 9th then Thomson’s sac bunt gets Pinner to 2nd, then Yannik doubles to right scoring the runner. Tie game. On to the 10th, a single and a double create another run, putting Strathroy back in front 8-7. In the Brampton 10th, they quickly load the bases for Lebel’s sac fly scoring DiRo from third. Tie game once again. The fans are almost as exhausted as the players, but there’s still more work to do. With Pinner on 2nd and Thomson on 1st enter Yannik Rickli once again, which he promptly delivers a shot to the left field fence scoring Pinner with the winning run. Game over, we live another day.

July 31 vs Ajax - Ajax 9  Brampton 1 - Not much to say about this game other than the team had nothing left in the tank after yesterday’s two backbreaker wins. You don’t realize how much of your body’s resources it takes to play stressful games like yesterday. You can prepare as much as you think is enough, but it’s still not enough. It’s not because you are doing anything wrong, it’s because what happened Saturday was so much out of the ordinary. You can turn losing into an advantage if you learn from it. It’s all a process. When you run out onto the field in Windsor next year you will feel as a player or coach you can handle anything that comes your way, because you’ve seen it all before. The more experienced you are, the slower the game becomes.

I have been critical of the number of errors that may have cost the team a win or two, but this weekend errors have not been an issue. The team gave up 5 unearned runs that didn’t cause any damage. The diamonds were in great shape providing true bounces, except for the ground ball Victor hit that somehow bounced over the first baseman’s head for a hit.

.....................................................

As a fan, I need to thank the team for the show they put on Saturday. The entertainment value was off the charts. After the game I looked around at the stands and most of the parents and girlfriends looked exhausted, relieved it was finally over.

The Erindale and Strathroy games will be talked about for many years to come. Old-timers sitting around the diamond  will say "hey Ralph remember when ......"  Tell me more about this Yannik Rickli guy. Yeah, it's true, way back in '22 he tied up the game vs Strathroy at the Elims in a must win game with his RBI double to right field in the 9th, then won it on his 10th inning single scoring Patrick Pinlac from 2nd. Even the players children (and there's a lot of them) will grow up knowing they were at Cullen Field in Windsor on that last day of July in 2022.

.....................................................

I thought it was a classy move by coach Fascia removing Mike Burke from the game before getting his third out, so the veteran southpaw could be acknowledged by his teammates. Would this be the last time we see Mike here in Windsor as the 38 year old puts the finishing touches on a very good 13 year career?

August

League play – 2-2

August 6 vs Erindale - Brampton 7  Erindale 6 - In the first game of a DH on a very hot and humid, sticky afternoon was a tight one that went down to the wire. The game featured 5 lead changes, which is hard to do in a 7 inning game. It shows how close these two teams are. Only 2 of the 6 runs scored by Erindale were earned off starter Lakhani because of 4 errors. He got out of a couple of jams by striking out 6. RJ Page came in for the 6th, giving up a hit. He was pitching when the Royals went ahead earning the win. Lebel got the save by pitching a clean 7th.

August 6 vs Erindale - Erindale 16  Brampton 14 - Erindale was up 15-7 after 3 innings, leaving the Royals too big a deficit to climb out of, not to say they didn't give it a try. Scoring 5 in the 5th and 2 more in the 6th made it close.

Brampton brought up Eric Lopez from the Juniors and got a taste of the Senior's league. I'm sure he learned much about himself and what he needs to work on to become a future regular member of this team. We do need pitching.

On the offensive side, the Royals belted out 8 extra base hits. Vic and Aidan added a home run, 2 triples and a double scoring 10 RBI. Pinner also needs to be mentioned for going 4 for 4 and adding 2 RBI.

August 11 vs Burlington - Brampton 10  Burlington 7 - Cam Hibbs threw his best game of the season earning a well deserved W. He gave up only a couple of runs, in his 5 innings of work.  He didn't allow Burlington to gain any momentum with his 5 ground ball outs resulting in 3 double plays, with Sookdeo starting 2 of them.

Logan followed Cam with 3 solid innings giving up 3 runs on 1 hit. Logan started 17 of the batters he faced with a strike, which we know is the best pitch in baseball. Starting with an 0 -1 count opens up so many options for the pitcher. B'Mac in his inning pitched, closed it out securing the win.

Michael Sookdeo not only brought his glove, he also did some damage with his bat going 3 for 4. His 3 singles earned him 3 RBI and he scored twice. Pinner continued his hot hitting with a 2 for 3 night, scoring twice and adding an RBI.

August 13 at Milton - Milton 17  Brampton 4 - Missing half the team coach Fascia had to rely on junior call-ups. Knowing it was a very important game, it would give the coach a glimpse of what the team may look like in the near future. The problem was, we were playing a hot team in Milton. There's not much to say about this one except to say Joe and Alex combined for a 6 for 7 day.

The Playoffs

August 20 vs Oakville - Oakville 5  Brampton 4 - This is the Royals last chance to make this a special season. All they need to do is win three of their four games at 9th Line.

Brampton charged out of the gate quickly scoring four times in the first 2 innings. They were getting batters on base and delivering them home on the strength of 3 singles and 2 doubles. Steve Hough had only thrown 26 pitches to get through his first 3 innings, Oakville gained momentum on a couple of infield hits, scored 3 in their 4th and added two more in the 5th.  The Royals couldn't muster any more runs so they will have to beat Etobicoke to advance in the playoffs.

August 20 vs Etobicoke - Etobicoke 5  Brampton 2 - Brampton responded with a couple of runs after the Rangers opened the game with  2 runs in the first, but Etobicoke scored 3 more of their own taking the game 5-2. Lakhani pitched a good game holding the Rangers to 4 earned runs, but they couldn't get anything going against veteran Hyde.

Season

Notables

In 2022 much was expected from the team because of what they accomplished in 2019 (before the pandemic). They had shown steady progress the previous couple of seasons, but this season seemed different, there was something missing. The team opened the season outscoring the opposition 54 - 31 in the first 4 games, then was outscored 30 - 11 in the next 2. This is not a winning formula. In 2022 the Royals scored 1.5 runs per game more than their great 2019 season but allowed almost 4 more runs per game. Pitching, pitching, pitching. If you have it, you're laughing, you can compete, without it, you can't.

2022 saw the emergence of pitchers Aidan Murphy (2022 ROY) and Arman Lakhani. Arman was well deserving of his 6-3 record. His best game was vs powerhouse Sarnia. Arman completed the first game in the Lakeside tournament giving up only 2 earned runs on 5 hits. That games' pitching performance gave the whole team a huge boost going in the next game vs Tecumseh.

If the Junior program goes to a 2 team setup we should be in line for a few good pitchers in a year or two.

If a team and its players are judged by how they play in the tournaments these four players should be highlighted. Yannik raised his batting average 19 points in tournaments, Dawson 103 points, Vic 74, and Marco 105 points.

This team is still very close to being the team they want to be, a team at the top of the standings, winning the Hap or the Elims. I think Frank Fascia did a good job this season extending his bench. Although not everyone can play in each game he did a great job of platooning, according to the situation.

Something should be said of the contribution of two veterans, Brad McLaughlin and Steve Hough brought their 26 years of experience. It wasn't their best years pitching but they delivered 5 wins and a couple of saves, while throwing over 60 innings. Being a few years short of 40 I think they did a remarkable job this season.

Once again, I can't wait till next year.
